World's First Battery-Backed DC Charger Enables Electric Boat Charging at Fowey Harbour

Fowey, Cornwall, UK – 30th October, 2025 –Aqua superPower today announced the unveiling of the world's first battery-backed DC charger in a marine environment at Fowey Harbour. This pioneering solution, delivered as part of The Electric Seaway (TES) project, now makes fast DC charging for electric boats possible even in areas with limited grid connections—unlocking sustainable voyages along Cornwall's iconic coastline.
The installation fulfills the TES project's bid promise to establish a flagship innovation site at Fowey Harbour. Aqua superPower's 60kWbattery system, connected to the site's single-phase power supply, trickle-charges efficiently from the local grid. This stored energy then powers a high-performance Aqua PKM 150 charger, delivering up to 50kVA of reliable DC charge directly to vessels. No more grid upgrade delays, electric boats can now recharge in under an hour, slashing emissions and advancing the UK's net-zero maritime goals.
"This is a transformative moment for marine electrification," said Karen Gill, COO of Aqua superPower. "Our battery-backed DC technology overcomes remote infrastructure barriers, delivering fast charging where it's needed most. Fowey Harbour is now a beacon for the global shift to clean boating."
"This is a game-changer for Fowey Harbour and Cornwall's waterways," said Paul Thomas, CEO & Harbourmaster at Fowey Harbour. "Aqua superPower's innovative battery-backed DC charger delivers on our TES commitment, enabling rapid electric boat charging despite our limited grid. We're proud to lead the way in sustainable maritime transport and protect our pristine coastal environment."
Key Highlights:
First-of-Its-Kind Innovation: Battery-backed DC charging debuts in a real-world marine setting, proving scalability for off-grid harbours worldwide.
TES Project Success: Delivered on schedule as the promised innovation site, advancing Cornwall's leadership in the national The Electric Seaway initiative.
Technical Spec:
60kW battery with single-phase trickle charging
Up to 50kVA DC output via Aqua superPower PKM150 charger.
Compatible with electric leisure boats, work vessels, and ferries.
Environmental Impact:
Enables zero-emission boating, reducing fossil fuel dependency and protecting biodiversity in sensitive coastal waters.
The TES project is funded through the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 3 (CMDC3), a programme by the Department for Transport, and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. The Electric Seaway is building a nationwide network of electric charging points for UK waterways. Fowey Harbour's deployment provides a replicable blueprint for remote sites, accelerating decarbonisation across maritime operations. Operators, boatowners, and visitors can experience the charger at Fowey Harbour starting today.
